Movies and television have given most people a completely unrealistic view of defensive shooting. At RangeXT, we train you for the realities of defensive encounters, not Hollywood fiction.
The Reality of Defensive Encounters
Distance
Most defensive shootings occur at extremely close range—typically within 7 yards, often within arms reach. This is not the time for precision marksmanship at 25 yards. You need to be able to draw and fire accurately under extreme stress at close range.
Time
Defensive encounters are measured in seconds, not minutes. The average encounter is over in 3-5 seconds. There is no time to carefully line up sights or assume a perfect stance. Your training must prepare you to act immediately and decisively.
Stress Response
Under life-threatening stress, your body undergoes significant physiological changes:
- Fine motor skills deteriorate
- Tunnel vision may occur
- Time distortion is common
- Auditory exclusion (not hearing your own shots)
What Actually Matters
Smooth, Reliable Draw
The draw stroke must be practiced until it is automatic. Under stress, you will not rise to the occasion—you will default to your level of training.
Adequate Accuracy at Speed
You need to be able to put rounds on target quickly. This does not mean bullseye accuracy—it means reliable hits to the vital zone under stress and time pressure.
Movement and Use of Cover
Static shooting makes you an easy target. Learning to move, use cover, and shoot from unconventional positions is essential.
Why RangeXT Training is Different
Our special operations-based methodology prepares you for real-world scenarios. We train you to handle stress, move effectively, and respond decisively. This is not recreational shooting—this is preparation for the worst day of your life.
