Whether you are a first-time shooter or looking to refine your skills, mastering the fundamentals is essential for safe and accurate shooting. At RangeXT, we focus on building a solid foundation that will serve you throughout your shooting journey.

The Four Pillars of Pistol Shooting

1. Proper Grip

Your grip is the foundation of accurate shooting. A proper grip should be high on the backstrap, with your support hand filling in the remaining space on the grip. Both thumbs should point forward toward the target. The grip should be firm but not white-knuckle tight.

2. Sight Alignment

Proper sight alignment means the front sight is centered in the rear sight notch, with equal light on both sides and the tops of all three sights level. Focus your eyes on the front sight while keeping the target slightly blurred.

3. Trigger Control

The trigger should be pressed straight back with smooth, consistent pressure. Avoid jerking or slapping the trigger. The goal is to be surprised when the gun fires. This prevents anticipation and flinching.

4. Follow Through

After the shot breaks, maintain your grip and sight picture. Do not immediately drop the gun or look at the target. Reset the trigger and prepare for the next shot.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Anticipating recoil: This causes shots to go low and left (for right-handed shooters)
  • Weak grip: Results in excessive muzzle flip and slow follow-up shots
  • Looking at the target: Focus should remain on the front sight
  • Rushing shots: Take your time and focus on fundamentals
